A “distressed” woman seeking help at a North Carolina church is now charged with murder, officials said.

Mt. Carmel Church of God of Prophecy said it was “locking up from service and fellowship” when a woman was spotted on its porch late Sunday, Sept. 17.

“She told me that she needed help, that she was OK but that she needed the law,” the church, located in the Roseboro area, wrote in a statement it posted on Facebook.

The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the house of worship and found the woman in a red Ford Mustang outside the church. She reportedly shared “that she may have been responsible for a person’s death” before a man’s body was found at another location.

Now the woman, whom deputies identified as 31-year-old Samantha Haines, is charged with murder. The sheriff’s office didn’t list attorney information for her in a news release.

Officials said they learned the sports car was registered to the man. Officials went to his Roseboro home and found his body outside, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office identified the man as 32-year-old Daniel Faircloth. Deputies in their release didn’t say how they believe Faircloth was killed, a potential motive or whether he knew Haines before the alleged homicide.

“The circumstances leading to this tragic incident remain unclear, and our investigation is currently ongoing..., ” the sheriff’s office wrote. “We will continue to diligently investigate this matter to establish a clearer understanding of the events that transpired.”

Haines was taken to jail, where she was “being held without bond pending further developments in the case,” officials said.

The sheriff’s office, which said it plans to release updates when they become available, didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Sept. 18.

Roseboro is roughly 65 miles south of Raleigh.
