When a Maryland woman turned on the news one night, she was surprised to realize she had a winning lottery ticket on her hands.

The woman working as an optician for 30 years was convinced by her mother to give the Powerball a try, Maryland lottery officials said in an Oct. 13 news release. The “avid instant ticket enthusiast” was “strictly focused on scratch-offs” before buying her Powerball ticket.

So, the woman decided to purchase a $2 Bonus Match 5 ticket for the first time at a Tobacco Barrel in Baltimore, lottery officials said.

Later, during the Oct. 10 Powerball drawing, the woman was in for a big surprise while watching the news. She realized she had a winning ticket worth $50,000, leaving her in “complete shock,” lottery officials said.

“’Oh my,’ was all she could say,” the release said.

Shortly after her revelation, she made a call to her mother, and then her husband, to share the exciting news.

The woman plans to use her newfound winnings to pay off some of her bills, as well as share the money with her family, according to lottery officials.
