Police in Chicago are calling for the public’s help after they say a 12-year-old boy died after he was found shot in the middle of the street.

“We should be outraged,” said Chicago Councilman William Hall. “When is another kid gonna get shot before we finally figure out that kids matter?”

Officers responded to a call about gunfire in Englewood, on the South Side of Chicago, around 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 22, Chicago Police Deputy Chief Gilberto Calderon said at a news conference.

“The young child was found in the middle of the block, not in front of his home, that I know of at this point. So, the body was just found there on the street,” Calderon said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the boy as Damien Green, according to WLS-TV.

“Our hearts are breaking for the family of Damien Green. Please join us in praying for them. Please also pray for our boys in Englewood who grow up with the everyday reality of the threat of violence,” a Facebook post by Englewood Family Outreach, a charity, said.

Calderon said Green had a gunshot wound.

“A 12-year-old child that won’t go to school tomorrow, a 12-year-old child that doesn’t have an opportunity,” Hall said.

Calderon said no witnesses have come forward as of late Oct. 22, and police are asking the community for help to find the person who killed Green.

“We will continue, and we will. We’ll get to the bottom of it. No doubt about it,” Calderon said.

A $15,000 reward is also being offered for information leading to an arrest, police said.
