Dad killed and dismembered 10-year-old son but won’t say where remains are, cops say
An Indiana man is going to prison for over 50 years after police say he killed and dismembered his son, news outlets reported.
“Oh, I’m dead. Don’t expect me to come home,” were some of the last words 10-year-old Nakota Kelly said before he visited his dad, who later admitted to killing him, according to WXIN.
Anthony Dibiah pleaded guilty but mentally ill for the 2020 death of Nakota, according to WTHR.
As part of a plea deal, Dibiah admitted to killing Nakota by suffocating him and then dismembering his body, WXIN reported.
However, Nakota’s mom, Hayley Kelly, hasn’t gotten the closure of knowing where her son’s body is, according to WTHR.
“If he had remorse, he would tell me where my son is,” Kelly said, according to the outlet.
Kelly said after her son made comments that he thought his dad was going to kill him, she reported her son’s concerns to the Department of Child Services. She had reported alleged abuse in the past as well, according to The Indianapolis Star.
“I noticed that every time I reported it the abuse got worse and it got more secretive,” she told the outlet.
The two were in the middle of a custody battle, The Star reported.
“I think he did it to hurt me, and he got what he wanted out of it,” Kelly told WTHR.
Kelly said she last spoke to Nakota on July 18, 2020, over the phone. She told him she would see him the next day. But, she never did, The Indianapolis Star reported.
About two hours later, Dibiah called a relative and screamed, “I just killed my son,” according to court documents obtained by The Star.
Police went to Dibiah’s apartment that day and knocked, but no one answered. They said they heard someone moving around inside and saw Dibiah’s vehicle parked outside, but did not feel they had enough to enter without permission, so they left, WTHR reported.
Court documents said Dibiah called at least two people, telling them he killed Nakota, according to WXIN.
The next day, police returned and found blood and “brain matter” in the bathroom of Dibiah’s apartment, but neither Dibiah nor Nakota were there, WTHR reported.
Dibiah was arrested in Missouri by the Missouri State Highway Patrol around 4 p.m. that day, according to the outlet.
On Wednesday, Oct. 25, Dibiah was sentenced to 52 years in prison, according to WXIN. Kelly has also filed a lawsuit against the Indiana Department of Child Services.
Nakota’s remains have not been found as of Oct. 26.
