Blind, deaf Great Dane saved from starvation, Florida rescue says. Now she needs home
A blind and deaf Great Dane is searching for her forever home after she was found with dozens of other dogs, neglected and starving, a Florida rescue says.
Angel, a 6- or 7-year-old white and double merle Great Dane, came to the Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue weighing only 60 pounds, the rescue said in an Oct. 30 Facebook post.
“Angel’s journey has been one of unwavering resilience,” the rescue said in the post. “She was an extreme starvation case and very sick when she came in – weighing less than 60 pounds, riddled with infection, parasites, heartworm positive, pneumonia in her lungs and extremely elevated liver enzymes.”
The rescue said despite improvement over the six months since her rescue, Angel will need to stay on antibiotics and steroids for the rest of her life because of the damage her lungs and liver have endured.
“Despite the challenges life has thrown her way, she has never lost her gentle, sweet disposition. She embodies the true spirit of courage and determination, inspiring everyone she meets,” the rescue said.
Angel currently lives in a foster home in Defuniak Springs with a mom, four other dogs, a bunny and three chickens, the rescue said.
She uses her sense of smell to get around and has no problem navigating the house and yard without sight or hearing, according to the post.
“She is house-trained, with minimal accidents, and does great with a routine. Her favorite thing to do is be snuggled up on the couch, enjoying a snooze. She is definitely a cuddle bug with a very laid-back personality. No matter what though, Angel’s biggest concern is knowing that her ‘person’ is close by,” the rescue said.
Angel likes to have a fluffy blanket in her crate and isn’t super excited about toys, the rescue said. But, she does love a Kong toy filled with peanut butter and spending time with her canine siblings.
“Angel is a hospice case, and all she desires is a loving family who will provide her with the love and comfort she deserves in her twilight years,” the rescue said.
Northwest Florida Great Dane Rescue has waived the adoption fee for Angel, and anyone interested in giving her a home must pick her up from her foster family, according to the post.
