A 21-year-old store clerk was fatally shot by a customer after an argument over the poor condition of the cash he used for payment, police said.

Akron police said the incident occurred at about 11:16 p.m on Dec. 12 at Borders Drive Thru.

The customer tried to buy a Black and Mild cigar with a bill that was in “poor and unacceptable condition,” according to a Dec. 13 Akron Police Department news release.

During a dispute about the cash, the customer pulled out a gun and demanded the cigar, the release said.

The clerk gave the customer the cigar and asked him to leave, according to police.

The customer fired two shots at employees, then fled on foot, the release said.

Officers found that the victim appeared to be shot in the neck, according to police. “Within minutes of arriving, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene,” the release said.

Police said they are searching for the customer. Anyone with information is asked to call the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau at 330-375-2490 or 330-375-2Tip.

Akron is about 40 miles southeast of Cleveland.
