A man is accused of fatally shooting his mother in their home, Missouri authorities say.

Jaylen Johnson, 25, was arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, according to the Olivette Police Department. Attorney information for Johnson was not listed.

He was living with his mother, 56-year-old Monica Johnson-McNichols, when he shot and killed her the morning of March 7, police said.

According to charging documents, Johnson-McNichols was attempting to enter the back door of the shared home when Johnson shot her, KSDK reported. A motive for the shooting is unclear.

Paramedics arrived to find the woman with a gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, Johnson-McNichols was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Johnson was being held in the St. Louis County Jail with a $100,000 bond as of March 8, according to jail records.
