A Nebraska man said he rarely plays the lottery but decided to take a chance, and it paid off.

Brant Edgington went to a store in Fremont to buy a pre-made salad for lunch for the next day. While he was there, he decided to play the Mega Millions for the March 22 drawing, according to a news release from the Nebraska Lottery.

Edgington said his father and grandfather are avid lottery players, but he only really plays when the jackpot gets high, according to lottery officials.

“I don’t play all that often,” he said. “As a single parent, bologna is more important, financially.”

After the drawing, Edgington went back to the store to have the cashier check his ticket, according to officials.

“They disappeared for a minute,” he said. “Then a different lady came up with her and they just stared at me. She told me, ‘Don’t pass out when I tell you this.’”

That’s when he found out he won $1 million.

Edgington claimed his prize on April 5, officials said. He said he doesn’t think he will keep playing long term.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
