Hiker stumbles upon human remains at campsite near Oregon coast, cops say
A hiker stumbled upon human remains at a campsite near the Oregon coast, deputies said.
Now authorities are working to identify the remains.
The hiker found them at a dispersed campsite April 13 outside of Newport, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
A dispersed campsite doesn’t have any amenities or services.
The remains were found about 300 feet from the road and were in “thick foliage,” deputies said.
They appeared to have been outside for a “prolonged period of time.”
“The remains have been tentatively identified but will undergo advanced testing to make a final determination,” deputies said.
Deputies said the circumstances around the person’s death aren’t suspicious.
Newport is a coastal city, about a 130-mile drive southwest from Portland.
