A puppy that’s not yet even 1-year-old needs the attention he so craves after spending over four months in a Kansas animal shelter.

Meet Ernie, a black breed dog with a large personality that matches his exuberant, and loving, nature at the Helping Hands Humane Society.

“Ernie doesn’t need much to make him happy - give him a soft bed and a toy, and he’ll keep himself occupied for quite some time! If you have treats and are willing to give some away for a good ‘sit’ or two, even better,” the shelter said in a May 22 Facebook post .

“This 11-month-old shelter pup has now been with us for 140 days. He hasn’t gotten much interest - like many of our dogs, he can come across a little...over-exuberant in his kennel! If he doesn’t have something to get his attention like a ‘sit’ command for a treat or a toy, he may also jump up on you in excitement. These are pretty typical behaviors we see from young, energetic dogs that are easy to replace with consistency and training.”

The photos show an eager pit bull terrier with a lot of love to share — and hopefully he’ll get treats and belly rubs in return since he’s “truly just a big kid who is excited to get attention and looking for fun,” the post reads.

“We know sometimes large breed black dogs with short coats like Ernie can all start to look the same in the shelter environment, but they each have a unique and wonderful personality! This guy is goofy, eager to learn (if food is involved), and LOVES toys.”

His profile on AdoptaPet.com shows Ernie giving soulful eyes in his photos. His fee is completely waved thanks to the Pedigree Foundation for sponsoring him.

Helping Hands Humane Society is located in Topeka.
