A 2-year-old shelter dog has “already gone through so much” — and now, the South Carolina pup needs a home.

“His previous owner struggled with homelessness and made the selfless decision to surrender Ziggy after realizing they were no longer able to give him the care he deserved,” the Charleston Animal Society wrote June 8 on Facebook. “In spite of it, this sweet, sweet dog still hasn’t stopped smiling.”

Ziggy landed at the shelter May 23 when his family faced the “incredibly hard decision” about whether to keep him. After experiencing homelessness, they couldn’t bring Ziggy with them to their new home, spokesperson Kay Hyman told McClatchy News in an email.

As Ziggy waits for his next home, he has become known as a “bundle of joy with a heart as big as his boundless energy.” He’s also a “social butterfly” who loves mud puddles and acts more like a puppy than a 2-year-old dog.

“This super sweet pup is the epitome of playfulness and enthusiasm,” the shelter wrote in an online adoption profile. “At his core, Ziggy is a loving companion who adores both people and other dogs.”

Despite Ziggy’s love for other dogs, the shelter believes he would do best in a home without a canine companion. The mixed-breed pup “will need work with a professional dog trainer to address his resource guarding issues he has exhibited towards other dogs before introducing him into a multidog household,” the animal organization wrote.

As of early June 12, Ziggy was still available for adoption. More details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at charlestonanimalsociety.org.

“Ziggy is the perfect dog to spend your summer with,” the shelter wrote. “Whether it’s fetching like a pro, going on long walks, or just hanging out by the pool, Ziggy is the dog for the job.”
