Lottery player out of work during cancer treatment wins big in Ohio. ‘It’s a blessing’
A West Virginia man says he can now help his wife after years of not working while getting treatment for cancer.
While spending time with his son, Melvin Stubbs III went to purchase a lottery ticket on July 8, Ohio lottery officials said in a release.
“I just went over the bridge to play my numbers like normal,” he told lottery officials. He purchased the ticket in Belpre, Ohio, which is right along the border with West Virginia.
That night, he learned he had won $140,000, officials said.
“I was pretty happy about it,” he said. “I couldn’t sleep that night.”
He’ll take home $100,800 after taxes, officials said. Stubbs is “overjoyed” that he can help his family financially.
“I’m gonna try to save it up and help my wife because I hadn’t been able to work a few years,” he told officials.
Belpre is about a 110-mile drive southeast from Columbus.
