‘Trace’ of snow reported on 90-degree day at Pennsylvania airport. What’s happening?
The National Weather Service reported a “trace” of snow at a Pennsylvania airport in the middle of a sweltering July day.
But how?
On July 14, thunderstorms passed over the Philadelphia International Airport, according to a Facebook post by the National Weather Service.
The thunderstorms produced small hail.
“Since hail is frozen precipitation, this counts as a ‘trace’ of snow in our climate reports,” the post said.
Temperatures in Philadelphia reached 94 degrees on July 14, according to AccuWeather.
“While rare, it is not unusual,” the post said.
Between 1911 and 2024, this has happened 14 times in the months of June, July and August, according to the organization.
This breaks a record snowfall in Philadelphia, with the previous record being 0.0 inches, set in 1870.
