Playful shelter dog needs home after being overlooked for years. ‘They just walk by me’
A playful shelter dog has been overlooked for more than three years — and still needs a home.
“No one ever has given me a chance,” a Florida shelter said in a video caption written from the perspective of Sabie the dog. “They just walk by me.”
Humane Society Naples doesn’t know much about Sabie’s past but said he arrived from another animal rescue organization in January 2021. He has spent more than 1,200 days at the shelter, becoming its longest resident.
“Despite the obstacles Sabie has faced, he deserves to find a loving family,” the humane society wrote July 14 on Facebook. “He has never had a break from the shelter, which can cause significant stress.”
Sabie is described as an “extremely loyal dog” who’s scared of strangers. Humane society workers have been helping him trust people, the shelter wrote on social media and in an email to McClatchy News.
“Once Sabie gets comfortable with you, he is the silliest and most playful boy,” the shelter wrote. “He loves water, hoses, tugs, stuffed toys, balls, and just hanging out.”
As of July 16, the 5-year-old mixed breed pup was still listed as available in an online adoption profile. The humane society hopes the energetic dog is matched with a patient new owner.
“His ideal home would be with someone that can truly invest time and effort into building the strong bond that he requires,” the shelter wrote.
More details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at hsnaples.org. The animal organization in Naples, a roughly 165-mile drive south from Tampa, also said it could place Sabie in a foster home.
