Deputy arrested on 32 counts of rape and dozens of other felony charges, Ohio cops say
An Ohio sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on 58 felony charges, including more than a dozen rape counts involving a victim under the age of 13, authorities said.
Charles R. Davis, a Franklin County sheriff’s deputy and Circleville resident, was arrested July 31 by the U.S. Marshals’ Task Force in Ross County on 32 counts of rape and 26 counts of gross sexual imposition, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Attorney information was not available for Davis.
Authorities said Davis has been on administrative leave since September when the sheriff’s office learned of the investigation.
Davis has been on the force for 21 years, the Columbus Dispatch reported.
Davis faces 16 charges of engaging in sexual conduct with a child under the age of 13 and 16 counts of engaging in sexual conduct by force or threat of force, the outlet reported, citing indictment records.
Court records show Davis was released from jail on personal recognizance and fitted with a GPS ankle monitor. He is ordered not to have any contact with minor children with the exception of his biological kids.
“This is an extremely serious matter, and I have full faith in the investigation,” Franklin County Sheriff Dallas Baldwin said in the release. “We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of conduct and accountability. I want to reassure our citizens that we are dedicated to transparency, professionalism, and, as always, the safety of our community.”
The sheriff’s office said it will not make any additional comments while the case is active.
Circleville is about a 30-mile drive south from Columbus.
