Five adorable newborns are wide awake and raring to go at Connecticut zoo, photos show
Cue the nursery rhymes: The little pigs have arrived.
In a slew of adorable photos shared by Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, five newborn Guinea hog piglets — born Aug. 2 — are wide awake, snuggling and climbing on one another.
“Guinea hog piglets are born with their eyes open and can immediately get around, so these little ones are already very active!” the zoo said.
The furry quintet consists of four females and one male, the zoo said in an Aug. 6 news release.
While each piglet can currently fit in a human hand, they will grow to be huge animals. Adult Guinea hogs range from 150 to 300 pounds, according to the American Guinea Hog Association.
Guinea hogs are native to the United States and are commonly found on farms.
It’s been two and a half years since Beardsley’s last Guinea hog litter, so the new piglets are cause for celebration.
“Guinea hogs are at risk of becoming an endangered domestic species, so we are also very pleased and proud to support their population,” Zoo Director Gregg Dancho said in the release.
Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is in Bridgeport, about a 20-mile drive southwest of New Haven.
