73-year-old man on lake trip with wife dies after canoe flips, California deputies say
A 73-year-old man on a lake trip with his 72-year-old wife died after their canoe flipped, California deputies say.
As the pair were canoeing on Lake Britton at around 12 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, their canoe flipped and both were thrown into the water, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The wife, who was wearing a life jacket, swam to shore, but her husband, who was holding a life jacket, disappeared in the water, deputies said.
For hours, the woman tried to flag down passing boaters, according to deputies.
Deputies said they arrived at the lake after getting a call shortly after 7:30 p.m. about the overturned canoe.
They searched the area by boat and found the husband’s body “along the shore,” deputies said.
He was pronounced dead on scene, according to deputies.
The man’s identity will not be released until his next of kin has been notified, deputies said.
Lake Britton is about a 225-mile drive north from Sacramento.
