A substitute teacher is accused of inappropriately touching students at an elementary school, according to Michigan prosecutors and news outlets.

Timothy Allen Daugherty, 61, was charged with six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct on Aug. 29 following allegations at a Highland Township school, Oakland County Prosecutors said in a Sept. 4 news release.

“This was a trusted individual in a school that preyed upon kids,” Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a news release. “I applaud the bravery of the young victims who came forward.”

Allegations about the contracted teacher started in April, prosecutors said, and he was suspended from work.

“Huron Valley Schools was made aware of information regarding allegations of misconduct involving a contracted substitute teacher named Tim Daugherty. After a thorough investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, the prosecutor has moved forward with formal charges. Please note the individual was immediately removed from the District upon learning of the allegations,” the school district said in a statement to McClatchy News.

At a school board meeting in May, parents at Spring Mills Elementary alleged five children were inappropriately touched, The Oakland Press reported.

Four families alleging their child was inappropriately touched by the teacher retained an attorney in May and said a lawsuit against the school district was in the works, WXYZ reported.

Daugherty was arraigned on Sept. 4 and his bond was set at $75,000, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 18.

If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison for each charge.

Highland Township is about a 45-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
