A man was shot to death inside a gas station after a dispute over a spilled cup of ice, a Mississippi sheriff said.

A passerby flagged down a deputy who was nearby on Oct. 25 and alerted him to the shooting at a Shell station in Washington, according to Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten.

The deputy arrived to find the accused shooter, who wasn’t named, sitting by the gas pumps at about 7:20 p.m., Patten said in a news release.

Authorities detained the man and seized a semiautomatic weapon, the sheriff said..

The victim, identified as James Keating, was found inside, lying dead on the floor.

Investigators learned the men got into a verbal spat when Keating, who was there getting some drinks, accidentally knocked over a cup of ice that the other man had set down, according to authorities.

During the argument, the man implied he had a gun, though he never brandished or pointed it at Keating, Patten said. That’s when deputies said Keating left the store, returned with a gun and confronted the man.

“The argument turned physical when Keating assaulted the shooter and the shooter in return shot Keating multiple times,” according to the release.

Patten said investigators have evidence from the incident and added that bystanders have been cooperative, as has the accused shooter.

“This appears to be a senseless act of violence that will forever change two families’ lives,” he said.

Washington is about a 100-mile drive southwest from Jackson.

Gun violence in the U.S.

Thousands of people in the U.S. die from firearm injuries every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Firearm injuries and deaths continue to be a significant public health problem in the United States,” the CDC said, adding that there were more than 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the U.S. in 2022.

That same year, firearm-related injuries were also among the leading causes of death for people ages 1 to 44, according to mortality data.

Public health experts say the impact of gun violence goes far beyond victims and their families.

“Shooting incidents, including those in homes, schools, houses of worship, or workplaces, shopping areas, on the street or at community events can affect the sense of safety and security of entire communities and impact everyday decisions,” the agency said.
