Massive wave slams into three men on Hawaii beach, overtaking them, video shows

Three men were “barely able to get to shore on their own” after a large wave crashed into them on a beach in Hawaii, officials said.

A video shows the men on a rocky area of Oahu’s North Shore as they’re overtaken by the wave. The footage is credited to Matt Moore and Rincon Designs Surf Shop, and it was shared on social media.

“Ocean rule #1: Never turn your back on the ocean….” the Instagram post reads in part.

The video goes on to show the men struggling to maintain their footing in the rocky tide pool as massive waves continue to crash down.

Shayne Enright, a spokesperson for Honolulu Ocean Safety, said in a news release that the three men barely made it back to shore on their own.

Ocean Safety and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services responded to the incident at about 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 29, Enright said.

The men were treated “for multiple abrasions from head to toe” but declined a ride to the hospital, Enright said in the release.

At least 15 people were rescued at the North Shore that day and an estimated 10,000 “preventative actions” by rescuers were taken, officials said.

When the surf is high, people should stay off the rocks as “the tide pools are not safe from the powerful waves and you are risking your life,” the release said.
