Senior dog rescued from ‘house of horrors’ gets bad news. Then a hero steps in
A senior pup in Pennsylvania is finally getting the life she deserves after surviving a lifetime of abuse.
Chessie, a sweetheart of a dog, was rescued by Animal Law Enforcement after receiving a complaint about animals living in an unhealthy environment. Chessie was then found in a horrifying situation, the Pennsylvania SPCA — which is located in Philadelphia — said in an Oct. 18 Facebook post.
“The home was filled with trash, excrement, barely any food or water, and heartbreakingly, several deceased animals. Inside, too, was Chessie, a 12-year-old boxer/Weimaraner mix,” the shelter said. “She was brought to our Philadelphia headquarters alongside another dog, five cats and 2 pigeons.
“Our hearts broke for this old gal.”
Over the months, Chessie was treated for numerous ailments from living in “a house of horrors” including a flea infestation, but she began to understand what love feels like, posts about her said.
Then something horrible happened.
“But just when we thought her page was finally turning, we discovered that Chessie is battling an aggressive cancer and given a terminal diagnosis,” the shelter posted on Dec. 9.
The diagnosis didn’t deter the SPCA from finding Chessie a loving home, so they enlisted the help from some major players, including the Philadelphia Flyers and the Tortorella Foundation.
“For once in her life, even if it was just at the end, Chessie deserved to experience a real home. With a real family. And luckily, one hero stood up,” the shelter said in the Facebook post. “In a bittersweet ending, Chessie is now finally getting to experience the life she’s always deserved in a home full of love (and taking the most peaceful of naps).”
Online commenters were overjoyed that Chessie has a home right before the holidays, so she can spend her final days surrounded by warmth she never knew existed.
“Thank you for adopting Chessie and giving her such a wonderful life with you and your family. You are her angels,” one person said. “This means so much and for the time that she has left she will be spending it with her forever family filled with so much love.”
“At least her final months and memories will be that of love,” another noted.
