A registered sex offender was arrested after being accused of trying to enroll in high school as a teenage girl, Oregon police say.

Workers with the Families and Communities Together, “the health and social service program for the Greater Albany Public School District,” contacted a school resource officer Friday, Dec. 13, concerned about a person trying to register for high school, the Albany Police Department said in a Dec. 18 Facebook post.

The person, who looked to be an adult, said they were a 15-year-old girl, according to police.

Further investigation showed the person had given a fake name and date of birth while trying to enroll as a high school student, police said.

The person was identified as 27-year-old Makayla Craig, a registered sex offender, according to police.

Craig was arrested on multiple charges, including computer crimes, forgery II and false swearing, and booked into jail, police said.

Per state law, homeless youth can “register for school without verifiable identification,” but there are protections in place to confirm their identity before they can attend school, according to police.

Albany is about a 45-mile drive north from Eugene.
