An Arizona dad was found dead near “a smoldering vehicle” after a man reportedly came to his home and said he was having car trouble, police said.

Paul Clifford, 53, left his house to help, and “concerned family members” called police when he didn’t return, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a Dec. 26 news release.

No arrests had been made in the homicide investigation as of Dec. 26, police said.

Clifford was found in the Redington Pass area, according to police.

Police didn’t say how Clifford died or whether the smoldering vehicle was his. The incident might be connected to a stolen vehicle found at an apartment building, police said.

In a GoFundMe, Sabrina Vining wrote that “we got the worst news a family can get and got confirmation that my dad, Paul Clifford, was murdered.”

She described him as “a gentle giant” with “a huge, caring heart” who left home at 11:30 p.m. Dec. 23 “to help a stranger with a stranded vehicle.”

Pima County is in south central Arizona and includes the city of Tucson.
