Powerball player chooses numbers based on golf round — and wins big in Maryland
A lucky Powerball player drew inspiration for his numbers from a recent golf round and won big in Maryland, lottery officials said.
The Calvert County man won $151,210 in the Dec. 21 drawing, the Maryland Lottery said in a Dec. 27 news release.
He matched four numbers plus the Powerball to win the initial $50,000 prize, which was multiplied 3x with a Power Play multiplier, lottery officials said.
The man also matched four numbers on the other four lines, giving him an additional $1,200, and a Double Play added another $10, bringing him to his grand total, according to the release.
He bought his ticket from a convenience store in Calvert County, lottery officials said.
His winning numbers were 1, because someone in his golf group hit a blind hole in one, 17, because it happened on the 17th hole, and 21, because it happened on the 21st day of the month, the man explained to lottery officials.
The last number was 58, which is a combination of the numbers of the two golf carts they were driving that day, 5 and 8, the lottery said.
He said he was “very grateful” and plans to use some of his winnings on new golf clubs.
The Powerball jackpot has not been hit since Dec. 7, according to the Powerball’s website. The estimated jackpot is $145 million, and the next drawing is Dec. 28.
