Hiker gets lost on trail and spends New Year’s Eve stranded, Hawaii officials say
A hiker in Hawaii rang in the new year lost on a challenging trail before he was rescued around sunrise, officials said.
The man, who wasn’t identified, was hiking on the Wahiawa Hills Trail on the island of Oahu “when he became lost and was unable to descend the trail on his own,” the Honolulu Fire Department said in a news release.
Rescuers were called at about 6:45 p.m. on Dec. 31 about the man, who’d been hiking for about four hours when he lost his way, officials said.
The search was suspended just after 8 p.m. because of inclement weather, but it resumed in the morning, officials said.
The man was found unhurt a little before 7 a.m. on Jan. 1, officials said.
He was airlifted to a landing zone, according to officials.
An entry on the All Trails website says the loop trail is “generally considered a highly challenging route” that “should only be attempted by experienced adventurers.”
