A “rare” gold coin worth thousands of dollars was dropped in a red donation kettle for The Salvation Army in Colorado over the holidays, continuing a “mysterious” tradition, officials said.

The gold Krugerrand from South Africa was found in a kettle Dec. 23 at a King Soopers grocery store in the Fort Collins area, according to a Jan. 9 Facebook post from The Salvation Army Intermountain Division.

The donation “marks at least the 26th year of this wonderful tradition in our community,” officials said.

The coin weighs about an ounce and is worth more than $2,700, officials said.

Donations placed in the kettles help The Salvation Army provide food boxes, meals, utility assistance and other services, officials said.

Similar donations have happened in other areas, too, including in Pennsylvania, where Fox News reported that a gold coin wrapped in a dollar bill was placed in a kettle on Christmas Eve.
