A 16-year-old boy was fatally shot after he reportedly pointed an air rifle at another driver in a confrontation in Alaska, police said.

The other driver, a 24-year-old man, was released following the preliminary investigation,” the Juneau Police Department said in a Feb. 3 news release.

The 24-year-old wasn’t named and neither was the 16-year-old who died in the incident.

The 24-year-old called police Feb. 3 and reported that a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta followed him from an area near a grocery store to a roundabout, according to police.

“After making several passes around the roundabout, the caller stopped his vehicle, and the other vehicle pulled up alongside,” police said.

Both drivers stayed in their vehicles, and “the caller said the other driver was upset, was yelling at him, and had what looked like a rifle in his hands,” according to police.

The caller told police “the other driver pointed the rifle at him, at which point, the caller pulled out a pistol and shot the other driver,” police said.

Officers found “a pellet/BB-style CO2 rifle” with the 16-year-old, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

It appears the man and teen didn’t know each other, police said.
