Man seeking ‘energy boost’ goes on coffee run. But lottery ticket gave the real jolt
A man wanted a “little energy boost,” so he went on a coffee run, Maryland Lottery officials said.
But the real jolt of energy came from the lottery prize he won.
The landscaper was on his way home late at night when he decided he needed a cup of coffee, according to a Feb. 6 news release by the Maryland Lottery.
While buying his coffee in Denton, he also picked up a Monopoly X50 instant ticket because he is fond of scratch-off games, officials said.
“I buy tickets all the time,” the Severna Park resident told lottery officials. “It’s fun, and I win often enough to keep me going.”
But he had no idea this “spur of the moment” purchase would land him $100,000.
The man scratched the ticket in the parking lot and his heart started pounding and his legs began to shake, officials said.
“I stared at it for a minute or two until the shock wore off. I think I said out loud, ‘There’s no way this is happening,’” he told officials. “Even though it said $100,000, I just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t.”
Officials didn’t specify what the man is planning for his winnings.
Denton is about a 70-mile drive southeast of Baltimore.
