A 54-year-old man died after a “rogue wave” carried him into the ocean while he was at a tidal pool area with family in Hawaii, police said.

Royden Daikawa of Hilo struggled to swim back to shore before he was pulled unresponsive from the water by Hawai‘i Fire Department rescuers, the Hawai‘i Police Department said in a March 6 post on Facebook.

He was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital, police said.

The incident happened March 1 at the remote tidal pool area dubbed the Mermaid Pond on the eastern coast of the island of Hawaii, police said.

Daikawa and family members were standing near the water when the “large wave came crashing down behind a rocky mound,” according to police.

Daikawa “was standing in front of this rocky mound” and was swept away, police said. At one point, he was about 100 yards off the shore, according to police.
