A lottery player spent $10 on a ticket — and won an “epic” jackpot prize in North Carolina.

The player bought a ticket that scored the top prize in the Wheel of Bonuses game on March 9, making it worth $466,415, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Wheel of Bonuses is a progressive jackpot game that offers online tickets starting at 50 cents. To hit the jackpot, a player must match digital icons or spin a prize wheel, rules show.

Though the N.C. Education Lottery doesn’t know where the winner was when they bought their lucky ticket, the person lives in the mountain town of Banner Elk, a roughly 80-mile drive northeast from Asheville.

As of about 11:30 a.m. March 10, the prize hadn’t been claimed. In North Carolina, winners of online games have about six months to cash in, lottery officials wrote on their website and in an email to McClatchy News.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
