Man fatally shot partner in front of her 2-year-old grandson in Colorado, officials say
A man accused of fatally shooting his longtime intimate partner while she sat on the couch with her grandson is headed to prison, Colorado prosecutors said.
Clemente Flores-Hernandez, 45, was sentenced to 60 years behind bars after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault, the Denver District Attorney’s Office said in a March 11 news release.
Defense attorney information wasn’t immediately available March 12.
Flores-Hernandez is accused of shooting 44-year-old Karol Bedoya “four times at close range” while she was watching TV alongside her 2-year-old grandson on Feb. 24, 2023, prosecutors said.
He then strangled her adult son “until he collapsed” after the son heard the gunshots and came running, according to prosecutors.
Flores-Hernandez drove off with the 2-year-old grandson, prosecutors said, and later was arrested following a high-speed chase. The child “was found unharmed,” according to prosecutors.
Flores-Hernandez and Bedoya had been “in an intimate relationship” for about a decade, prosecutors said.
In an online obituary, translated from Spanish, the Colombian-born Bedoya was described as a devoted and dedicated mother and grandmother.
“Karol Bedoya’s murder is yet another terrible reminder of the tragic toll domestic violence takes on our community and our families,” District Attorney John Walsh said, per the release. “We hope that today’s guilty plea and sentence provide some measure of comfort to Karol’s family and friends.”
