A man accused of stabbing his longtime girlfriend with a steak knife while visiting Hawaii from California is headed to prison, officials said.

Richard Lopez, now 67, was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for attempted manslaughter, the County of Hawai‘i Office of the Prosecuting Attorney said in a March 19 post on Facebook. He must serve at least six years and eight months, prosecutors said.

McClatchy News reached out to his attorney March 21 and was awaiting a response.

Lopez was visiting the island of Hawaii in September 2022 when prosecutors said he stabbed his 64-year-old girlfriend “multiple times with a steak knife” at Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort.

The girlfriend suffered life-threatening injuries in the stabbing in a guest room, police said at the time.

The couple were together for 17 years, according to prosecutors.

Lopez remained behind bars in Hawaii during the court process, prosecutors said.

Police said he’s from San Pedro, California, about a 25-mile drive south from Los Angeles.
