An angler spotted something strange near the edge of a pond where he was fishing in Utah — and after investigating with his fishing rod, he realized it was human bones, police said.

“Officers responded and confirmed that the bones appear to be human remains,” West Valley City police said in a March 26 post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The medical examiner’s office collected the remains and would try to identify them, the police department said.

“At this time, we have no information about a cause nor manner of death, nor do we have any information to identify the person,” police said.

The area consists of streams and ponds running through office buildings and a golf club.

The angler said he was fishing in a channel that leads out to a bigger area of the pond when he saw what “looked like a skull” that he initially thought belonged to an animal, according to KSTU. “But then he used his fishing rod to turn it over, and he saw eye sockets,” the outlet reported.

“There’s no mistaking what I saw,” the angler told KSTU. “It was a human skull in the mud.”

West Valley City is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Salt Lake City.
