Senior shelter ‘mascot’ adopted after 4 years. ‘The joy in his eyes says it all’
An 11-year-old dog had become a “mascot” at the Alaska animal shelter where he spent 4 years waiting for someone to bring him home.
His patience paid off, and he finally found a family who wants to give the senior the best last years of his life, Kodiak Animal Shelter said in an April 16 post on social media.
“After 1,463 days in our shelter, Ace (our shelter mascot) has been ADOPTED!!!” the shelter wrote in the post. “He has waited patiently for his fur-ever family & he finally found them.”
A video posted by the shelter shows Ace’s new family and him enjoying a going-away party the shelter organized to celebrate his adoption.
“The joy in his eyes says it all — he’s ready to embark on a new journey filled with love, belly rubs, treats & cuddles,” the shelter said.
His new family, newlyweds Makayla and Christian Weeks, planned to adopt a puppy but fostered Ace in the meantime, Alaska’s News Source reported.
They changed course when Ace made himself at home with them, the outlet reported.
“(Ace) sleeps in the bed with us. He rides front seat in my Mustang,” Christian Weeks told the outlet. “This is his whole life. He may be a part of ours, but this is the rest of his life.”
Several people commented on the posts saying they were beyond thrilled for the senior pup.
“It’s Ace special day to the rest of his life,” someone commented on the shelter’s Instagram video.
Kodiak is an island on the southern coast of Alaska, about 415 miles southwest from Anchorage.
