Man felt ‘disrespected’ at bar, then shot ‘bullet after bullet,’ CO officials say
A man is facing a sentence of at least 400 years in prison in connection with a bar shooting in Colorado that injured two people, officials said.
Efren Sanchez is accused of firing 28 rounds outside and into a bar in Greeley in August 2022 “after he felt ‘disrespected’ by another bar patron,” the Weld County District Attorney’s Office said in an April 21 news release.
A jury convicted him of 25 counts of criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree – extreme indifference, and 25 counts of criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree – after deliberation, plus two counts of crime of violence (a sentencing enhancer), according to prosecutors.
After taking sentencing minimums into account, he’ll face between 400 and 1,200 years behind bars when he’s sentenced in June, prosecutors said.
Defense attorney information wasn’t immediately available April 23.
Sanchez left the bar on Aug. 13, 2022, and then came back a short time later wearing a mask and carrying a rifle, according to prosecutors and police.
“Video surveillance showed Sanchez firing several rounds at people outside the bar, before firing several more rounds into the bar from outside the building,” prosecutors said, adding that two people were hit by the gunfire but lived.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia said Sanchez caused “panic and pain” when “he shot bullet after bullet” that night, per the release.
Greeley is about a 65-mile drive northeast from Denver.
