A toddler survived a 15-story fall from a Maryland apartment balcony in what many are calling a miracle.

The Montgomery County Department of Police said it is investigating the circumstances that led to the boy’s fall from a high-rise building in White Oak, Maryland, shortly after 2 p.m. May 15.

The 2-year-old boy plummeted from the balcony and landed in the bushes below, which likely broke his fall, investigators said.

“The child hit the bushes and landed in mulch, softening the impact,” Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Assistant Chief David Pazos told ABC News.

Law enforcement and fire rescue rushed to the building, and the child was hospitalized with a broken leg and “multiple internal injuries” that were deemed non-life-threatening, police said. He’s expected to survive.

“I think it was a combination of those bushes being there, those shrubs, and his size and weight,” Goff told the outlet.

Criminal charges have not been filed as of May 16, police said. The investigation is ongoing.

Montgomery County is adjacent to the northern border of Washington, D.C.
