A man drowned after going into a Montana river to collect his remote-control boat, officials said.

The man, whose name and age weren’t released, was seen struggling and then slipping under the surface of the Missouri River after going in for his boat on Sunday, June 8, Great Falls Fire Rescue wrote in a June 9 post on Facebook.

The fire agency, along with several other area agencies, launched vessels to help find him, according to officials.

Great Falls police also put up a drone to help search, officials said.

“Unfortunately, when (he) was located, he was pronounced dead on the scene as a result of drowning,” officials said.

The fire agency didn’t say whether he was wearing a life jacket.

Jeremy Virts, Great Falls Fire Rescue’s assistant chief, told McClatchy News by phone June 10 that the Missouri River can be fast-moving, even though it doesn’t always appear that way on the surface.

It’s also known to have undercurrents, he said.

Great Falls is about a 185-mile drive north from Bozeman.
