A fisherman was critically hurt when a tree fell on him along a river in Colorado, and bystanders across the water made sure he got help, officials said.

The bystanders couldn’t reach the fisherman or his fishing companion because of the Colorado River’s swift current, but they hiked to higher ground and called 911, Grand County Search and Rescue said in a June 16 post on Facebook.

The fisherman had a head injury and his “condition was deteriorating,” according to officials, who said he was stabilized, carried to the riverbank and then taken by boat to a helicopter during the June 13 rescue.

His fishing companion also was hit by the tree near the Shadow Mountain Reservoir but wasn’t seriously hurt “and was able to provide initial aid” to the fisherman, officials said.

Grand County includes Granby, which is about a 90-mile drive northwest from Denver.
