A 42-year-old man died in a fall on a nearly 9,600-foot mountain in Montana, officials said.

Brian Astle, from Provo, Utah, was going down “a steep, off-trail climbing route” from Mount Gould’s west face when he fell, Glacier National Park said in a July 11 news release.

The 9,557-foot Mount Gould is in the national park.

Park officials were notified of Astle’s fall at about 6 p.m. July 9, per the release, and his body was recovered the next morning by Two Bear Air Rescue.

Park officials said they extend “their deepest condolences to the family.”

Mount Gould is about a 170-mile drive north from Missoula.
