Man with arrow in his neck found dead in running pickup in Utah, feds say
A man was found dead with an arrow in his neck in a running pickup truck in Utah, and now another man is facing a murder charge, federal officials said.
Leroy Casper Poowegup Reed, 42, from Whiterocks, was indicted by a grand jury on a count of first-degree murder, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah said in a July 16 news release.
McClatchy News reached out to his attorney July 17 and was awaiting a response.
The victim — whose name wasn’t released — was found dead June 26 in Whiterocks, according to prosecutors.
The pickup was in a field, about 10 feet from the road, according to a criminal complaint filed in court.
Reed was on the porch nearby, the complaint said. There was blood on the road out front, and Reed “had his hand in the air and was yelling at law enforcement,” per the complaint.
Reed later told investigators that the man approached his home, the complaint said.
Reed said the man “looked like a serial killer in his green army outfit,” and he said the man “was telling him that he had killed his (Reed’s) son,” per the complaint.
Reed said he shot the man from his property, and the man “turned and walked back to his truck parked across the street,” according to the complaint.
Officials later determined Reed’s son had been with Reed’s mother and was okay, the complaint said.
Security footage from a community building captured the incident, according to the complaint.
The video showed the man walking toward the home and stopping in the road, the complaint said.
“Reed was then seen walking across the driveway,” stopping at the southwest end “with a bow and arrow drawn,” the complaint said.
The man put up his hands and Reed shot the arrow, according to the complaint.
Whiterocks is about a 160-mile drive southeast from Salt Lake City.
