An 82-year-old woman was seriously hurt in an apparent random attack on a trail in Oregon, and now an 18-year-old man has been arrested, police said.

The man, from Tigard, was booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree assault in connection with the incident, the Tigard Police Department said in an Aug. 5 news release.

He was set to appear in court for an arraignment the afternoon of Aug. 6, a spokesperson for the Washington County District Attorney’s Office told McClatchy News in an email.

The woman was walking on a trail in Tigard at about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 3 “when a younger man began following her, then suddenly physically attacked her,” police said.

The man ran off, “and the victim was left unconscious lying on the trail,” according to police.

People biking nearby came across the woman and called for help, police said, noting the woman was still in the hospital as of Aug. 5.

Police shared a photo of a suspect in an initial Aug. 5 news release, and the 18-year-old was identified “thanks to the news coverage in this case,” per an update later that day.

Tigard is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Portland.
