A 21-year-old fell about 30 feet from a waterfall into rocky water, Maine officials said.

Rescuers responded Wednesday, Aug. 13, to Screw Auger Falls, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said in a Facebook post.

The man had fallen from a ledge, “landed in the water and sustained serious injuries in the fall,” officials said.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene to help him.

Rescuers then had to trek 300 feet downstream in the water to get him to safety, officials said.

He was taken to a hospital by helicopter.

Screw Auger Falls is an out-and-back hike that takes less than five minutes, according to AllTrails.

The 23-foot-tall waterfall is a popular spot for swimming and picnicking.

“There are several areas where there is an exposed ledge without any fencing, so be careful in these areas,” the outdoor hiking guide said.
