Man leaves crashed UTV to get help, then rescuers can’t find him, AZ cops say
A man left a crashed off-roading vehicle to get help, then rescuers couldn’t find him, Arizona deputies said.
The UTV rolled during the night of Wednesday, Aug. 27, in the Bradshaw Mountains area in Crown King, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sept. 3 Facebook post.
Deputies got to the scene and learned he had walked away several hours earlier to find help, the sheriff’s office said.
Search and rescuers looked for him all night in the remote area but couldn’t find him.
Then in the morning, deputies said they found him several miles from the crash.
He had taken a wrong turn and gotten lost, deputies said.
Deputies said no one was injured in the UTV crash.
Authorities provided some tips for backcountry off-roading:
- Always wear a seatbelt
- Tell people where you are going and when you are coming back
- Bring extra water, food and a first aid kit
- Have a charged and reliable phone
- Don’t leave the area if you need help
- Drive sober
Crown King is about an 85-mile drive northwest from Phoenix.
