A lottery player spent $10 on a ticket — and won big in North Carolina.

The player tried their luck on the online Monopoly game on Sept. 10. The person beat 1-in-5 million odds to hit the jackpot, making their ticket worth $626,543, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on the social media platform X.

Monopoly is a progressive jackpot game that offers online tickets starting at 50 cents. To score the top prize, a player’s ticket must match several digital icons, rules show.

Lottery officials have said they can’t pinpoint where players are when they buy tickets for digital instant games. But the lottery knows the person who bought the jackpot-winning ticket lives in Ocean Isle Beach, a coastal town near the South Carolina border.

As of about 1:45 p.m. Sept. 10, the lucky ticket holder hadn’t claimed their prize yet. Winners of digital instant games have roughly six months to cash in, lottery officials wrote in emails to McClatchy News.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
