A man accused of sneaking into his ex-girlfriend’s house with a rifle and hiding in her bedroom closet was shot during a fight over the gun, Tennessee police said.

Corwyn Winfield, 26, snuck into the home of his ex-girlfriend with whom he shares three children before the morning of Oct. 25, according to an arrest affidavit from the Memphis Police Department.

Once inside, Winfield hid in her bedroom closet and waited, police said.

Winfield’s ex was asleep in the room with her current boyfriend and one of Winfield’s children when the adults woke up to the sound of Winfield jumping out of the closet, according to the affidavit.

“Winfield, armed with a black AR-style rifle, pointed the gun at (the two adults), and he made threats to kill them while ordering them not to move,” police said.

The man tried to get past Winfield, who stopped him at the door, then a fight broke out between the two, according to police.

The weapon was knocked from Winfield’s hands, and as he tried to get it back during the fight, the rifle went off. Winfield was shot in the arm, while other rounds went through the wall into the neighboring room, police said.

A woman and four children were asleep inside, ranging in age from 10 months to 17 years old, according to police.

Winfield eventually grabbed the gun off the floor and ran from the home before arriving at St. Francis Hospital by car, police said.

Once identified by his ex-girlfriend, Winfield was taken into custody on Oct. 27, according to jail records.

Winfield was charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault with domestic violence, aggravated assault, aggravated child abuse, neglect or endangerment, reckless endangerment, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and domestic assault, according to the arrest affidavit.

Winfield is being held on a $400,000 bond and is set to appear in court on Nov. 11.
