A San Antonio man accused of fatally hitting a co-worker while driving drunk in a Walmart parking lot has been sentenced to prison, Texas officials say.

Gabriel Arredono Rosas, 21, was found guilty of intoxication manslaughter and given 20 years in prison, the maximum possible sentence, Bexar County Criminal District Attorney’s office said in an Oct. 28 news release.

McClatchy News reached out to an attorney listed for Rosas but didn’t immediately hear back.

Records show the deadly incident happened April 30, 2024, as Rosas’ co-worker, Margaret Ureste, was leaving work, according to officials.

Ureste, 49, was born and raised in San Antonio and had three children with her husband, her obituary read.

Ureste was “unresponsive” when authorities arrived at the scene, and she later died at an area hospital due to her injuries, officials say.

Police began investigating, officials say, and “it was discovered that Rosas had consumed alcohol during his lunch break on the day of the incident.” KSAT reported he was working at Walmart and hit Ureste in the parking lot.

Rosas was 20 years old at the time. It’s unclear how much alcohol he’s accused of drinking.

“This case is a reminder of the life-altering consequences that stem from drinking and driving,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “We are thankful the court recognized the gravity of this offense and delivered justice for Margaret’s family.”

Ureste had worked at Walmart for six years, her obituary said. “When she was not working, she enjoyed being with her family, going out, or just simply relaxing on the sofa playing on her phone.”
