A 65-year-old man died after slipping and falling 130 feet into the Grand Canyon, Arizona sheriff’s officials reported.

The man fell from the Guano Point viewpoint at about 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team said in a news release.

Rescuers were called to help the Hualapai Nation recover his body, officials said.

Rescuers used ropes to recover his body from a rockpile below the viewpoint, deputies said.

The Guano Point viewpoint is named for miners who tried to remove nitrogen-rich bat guano from a nearby cave discovered in 1930.

Nearly 5 million people visited Grand Canyon National Park in 2024, according to the National Park Service.
