Obama pays tribute to victims of Rwanda genocide

President Barack Obama is remembering the victims of the Rwandan genocide, an event he says was “neither an accident nor unavoidable.”

On Monday, Rwanda will mark the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the 100-day genocide.

Obama says he honors the memory of those who were killed and stands in awe of the survivors. He also saluted the determination of the Rwandans, who he says have made progress toward healing old wounds and spurring economic growth in their country.

The president says the anniversary is a reminder to “resist our worst instincts” and remember “our obligations to our fellow man.”
