Watch big great white shark stalk terrified kayaker for several minutes in shocking video
Video shows a terrified kayaker being stalked for several minutes by a great white shark that approached him in waters off the coast of Northland, New Zealand.
The kayak fisherman was identified as Matthew John Patrick Wells by a Fox Weather report. Wells was documenting his fishing trip late last month with several cameras set up on his boat.
The video, shared with the Sacramento Bee through the content provider VideoElephant, shows a dorsal fin come out of the water behind the kayak. The fear in Wells voice is apparent.
“What the … great white! Great white shark!” Wells shouts as he began to paddle away in a hurry.
He cut the live bait on his fishing line, the video shows.
“(Expletive) this, I’m outta here!” he said.
Wells and a companion tried to throw a water bottle into the water to distract the shark, but that didn’t work.
In an interview with The New Zealand Herald, Wells said he has been kayak fishing since he was 6 years old and felt something like that was going to happen sooner or later.
“It was bound to happen eventually,” Wells told the outlet. “It was terrifying in the moment, but in reflection, I’m kind of thoughtfully gracious that I did get to have that experience ... You have to be grateful for that much, especially getting out of it completely unharmed with a good story to tell.”
