Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, will seek re-election next year in a new district that includes the city of Fresno since California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission passed new district maps.

Costa announced Tuesday he will run in the new 21st Congressional District, which encompasses a large portion of the city of Fresno. The new district also stretches down through Tulare County and includes part of the city of Visalia.

Speaking at an editorial board meeting with The Bee on Tuesday, Costa said he still hopes to serve Valley residents in his work.

He pointed to his history of living in the district he represents and the political importance of the city of Fresno.

“I still have the passion and the desire to want to help people, which is why I do this job,” he told The Bee. “The city of Fresno has been always a part of my district, in the state legislature and in Congress. It’s always been my base.”

The Redistricting Commission passed new maps for House of Representatives seats Monday night.

Costa, who was first elected to Congress in 2004 after serving in the California legislature, currently represents the 16th district, which stretches from western Merced County through Madera to the southern part of the city of Fresno. His current term expires 2023.

Over his elected tenure, Costa has represented San Joaquin Valley counties from Merced in the north down to Kern County in the south.
